Gallery 1874 Has History!

Picture
In 1874, Arvada, Colorado was in its infancy.  Founded by John A. Reno and Benjamin F. Wadsworth along the newly laid tracks of the Colorado Central Railroad, it was part of the original Colorado Gold Rush settlements formed by Lewis Ralston along Ralston’s Creek.  Originally named Ralston Point, it was changed to the name Arvada in honor of Wadsworth’s brother-in-law, Hiram Arvada Haskim.

The National Grange of the Order of the Patrons of Husbandry, founded in 1867 after the Civil War, is a fraternal organization that works to promote the wellbeing of families and communities, with a focus on economics, politics and and agriculture.  Throughout American history, The Grange has been key in regulating railroads and grain warehouses, the rural free mail deliveries and the Farm Credit System, among other things.

The Clear Creek Valley Grange Hall is the oldest building in Arvada, and the third oldest Grange Hall in the United States.  The building was raised from lumber milled near Turkey Creek and stone from local quarries, resting in a lot just south of its current location until around 1930.  The current lot was constructed with a concrete foundation and basement, providing stability for the community nearly a hundred years later.  The stucco exterior and original iron railings date back to the time of the move.

The building that now rests at 5665 Olde Wadsworth Blvd was built as a meeting hall, a collaboration between the Clear Creek Valley Grange and a short-lived branch of the Order of the Good Templars.  The Grange Hall was host to meetings, parties, and religious services.  It was a place for people to gather, to discuss the future of agriculture during the booming growth of central Colorado, and aid in husbandry for livestock.  At times it even served as a public debate hall, including during such important moments in history as the women’s suffrage movement.

In the early 1970s, the ownership and the nature of the building changed, from Grange Hall to theatre.  The Festival Playhouse opened its doors in 1973, embedding itself firmly in the community for nearly forty years.  Hosting a lively crowd and many family troupes, the Playhouse was owned by the Ault family for nearly 30 years before it closed its doors recently.

This historic building has been restored under the guidance of Mark and Carmen Sample, with help from the passionate team at Sample Supports.  It now opens its doors as Gallery 1874, where they plan to continue their pursuit of a healthy community.  Gallery 1874 will be available for meetings, weddings and parties for years to come.

Carmen and Mark Sample are the owners and masterminds behind Gallery 1874. In recognizing the building's historic impact and its limitless potential, they purchased the building in 2015 with the intent of turning it into an art gallery and event venue space.

Carmen, the designer behind the renovation, carefully chose aesthetics that would compliment the building's rich history while simultaneously creating a fresh and modern space for the people of Arvada to gather. Referencing historic photos, she was intent upon restoring the building to its original glory with a modern twist to compliment the unforgettable landmark in Olde Town Arvada.

In addition to Gallery 1874, Carmen also owns Sample Supports, Crystal Joys and Sample Therapy Services.

Mark, the owner of Samples Longmont, ensured there was a catering space inside of Gallery 1874 for all vendors to feel comfortable. Samples Longmont, is renowned for its international cuisine and award winning beer selection, as recognized by receiving Colorado's 2017 Best Beer Bar award by craftbeer.com.
